Application procedure — due February 11, 2014

June 9-17, 2014 (Montréal) & November 24-29, 2014 (Huddersfield, UK)

The Bozzini Quartet (Montréal) announces the tenth edition of the Composer’s Kitchen in its expanded format in collaboration with the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival (hcmf//) and the British Council.

This unique event revolving around the string quartet is a combination workshop, laboratory, playground, and master class. Their compositions will be read, played, assessed, analyzed, worked on, played again, and performed in the closing concert.

Invited Composers

  • Martin Arnold, Canada
  • Jennifer Walshe, UK

The Exchange

The Composer’s Kitchen hosts an exchange with the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, providing the opportunity for two UK composers to attend the Canadian edition, and two Canadian composers to attend the UK edition of the Composer’s Kitchen. All four participants attend both phases:

  • the seven-day workshop in June 2014 in Montréal, ending with a public laboratory-concert, and
  • a four-day follow-up masterclass in Huddersfield, UK in November 2014, to refresh and bring to maturity the work which was developed in the springtime. This phase closes with a feature concert at hcmf//.

Bozzini Lab — Vancouver Workshop 2014 — Call for young composers

Application procedure — deadline February 24th, 2014

At the School for the Contemporary Arts, Simon Fraser University (SFU), Vancouver

Acclaimed Montréal string quartet Quatuor Bozzini will give an intensive workshop on composing for strings from May 29th — June 6, 2014, in Vancouver BC. Hosted by the School for the Contemporary Arts at SFU, the workshop is intended for students who are in undergraduate composition programs, or who have recently graduated. Besides the quartet, composers Owen Underhill (SFU) and Christopher Butterfield (UVIC) will act as mentors.

The goals of the workshop are to improve technical skills for contemporary writing for strings and string quartet, and to provide a supportive environment for visionary compositional ideas. Those accepted to the workshop will be given composition exercises as a starting point for the week’s work, which they will be expected to prepare in advance. Finished works for string quartet are not required by the start of the course.

A public presentation will be held at the end of the week to present work done during the workshop.

Nine composers will be accepted; cost is CAN $650. Participants will be expected to arrange their own travel and accommodation. The program will take place in Simon Fraser University’s new cultural facility, the Goldcorp Centre for the Arts, in downtown Vancouver.

Applicants should submit scores and live recordings (if available) of two recent compositions in any genre; a short outline for a creatively ambitious new work for string quartet; and a resumé, to: office@quatuorbozzini.ca (see details below). Deadline for applications to be received is Monday, February 24th, 2014. Participants will be announced by mid-March.
