Program Notes

Pulau Dewata — “Isle of the gods” in Balinese—bears the mark of Vivier’s trip in Bali, in 1977. As he explains in his notes, he “wanted to write a piece filled with Bali’s spirit: dance, rhythm, but above all an explosion of obvious and simple life.” No specific instrumentation was indicated on the original score; instead, a note specified that it was “for any combination of instruments”. In this tribute-year of 2008 to the composer, Pulau Dewata has been played by many ensembles in Montreal; the Bozzini Quartet has long ago given the work a special place among its repertoire since Michael Oesterle, in 2002, orchestrated it for them.
