Jason Doell is an artist whose primary medium is sound, often presented as “composed” works, installations, and/or improvisations. Working with a combination of acoustic sound and live coding, Jason’s delicate work explores forms of meaning making and the thresholds of contextual coherences.
Through his works from 2015-18, Jason explored the tensions of being a Canadian settler artist who has inherited the brutal legacy of the British colonial project — combining graceful and delicate aesthetics, collage poetry, and music semiology. The culmination of this work was the 2018 album of chamber works “… amid the cannon’s roar, ”, which was released as part of the Open Ears Festival portrait concert of Jason’s works.
Jason’s current series of seven works (2018-20) are intermedial / multidisciplinary works that employ a sentimental, personalized, and personified approach to the exploration of meaning making. This work and the coinciding performances channel the sliding coherence of fractured narrativity, post-truthiness, textual fungibility, and fake blues.
