Brigitte Poulin

Brigitte Poulin is an active and accomplished soloist, chamber musician and vocal accompanist. Her list of repertoire is extensive and covers all periods, from the invention to the deconstruction of the piano. She studied at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Wien (Vienna Academy), at the Banff Centre for the Arts in Alberta, the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal, and obtained a doctorate specialized in the interpretation of contemporary piano literature from the Université de Montréal. She has commissioned and premiered more than 30 works for solo piano and different chamber ensembles. Brigitte Poulin presently lives in Montréal.

Brigitte Poulin was a founding member of Trio Phoenix (for flutes, cello and piano), an ensemble entirely dedicated to new music. As well, for ten years she taught piano and musicology at Bishop’s University.

Brigitte Poulin has performed for numerous Contemporary Music Festivals in Europe, Canada and the USA (among others: the Montréal’ International MNM and MusiMarch festivals, June in Buffalo, Brussels’ Ars Musica, the Edmonton New Music Festival, the York Late Music Festival, and the Brighton’ Adur Arts Live). She has also given piano masterclasses and chamber music workshops in Canadian and American Universities.

During the past few years, we have heard Brigitte Poulin perform with clarinettist Lori Freedman, percussionist D’Arcy Philip Gray, flutists Guy Pelletier and Patrick Healy, violinist Silvia Mandolini, pianists Laurent Philippe, Sara Laimon and Morritz Eggert, soprano Ingrid Schmithüsen and members of the Quatuor Bozzini string quartet. She has also contributed in the artistic seasons of the Montréal ensembles SMCQ, ECM+ and Bradyworks as well as for the Toronto Ensemble Continuum. She has recorded CDs for Centredisques (solo work by R Murray Schafer), SNE (with violist Laura Wilcox), Fonovox (Langlais songs with soprano Louise Marcotte) and Amberola (solo works by Erik Satie). Her concerts and recitals are often broadcast by the SRC/CBC Radio.

In 2007-08, she will record 3 CDs — one of which will be entirely dedicated to new Canadian works for solo piano — as well as start a new sextet, Transmission.
