Ingar Zach was born in Oslo (Norway) in 1971 and currently lives in Madrid. An improvising percussionist known for his wide range of sounds, he has developed a highly subtle and dynamic approach to his instruments. Zach started his percussion training at age 7. At 10 he was already playing in Oslo’s jazz big band, and he made his progressive rock debut at age 15. From 1993 until 1997, he studied percussion, Norwegian traditional music, musicology, jazz, and composition. He met Ivar Grydeland in 1990 and turned full-fledged to free improvisation. With Grydeland, he founded the record labels Sofa (2000) and Sillon (2007). He leads an international career as a solo performer and in permanent ensembles, including Dans les arbres and Mural (with Kim Myhr and Jim Denley). Zach is also involved in multiple collaborations and has shared the stage with many other instrumentalists such as Barry Guy, Evan Parker, Axel Dörner, Kevin Drumm, Susie Ibarra, Jaap Blonk, Annette Krebs, Andrea Neumann, Phil Minton, Jean Marc Montera, John Butcher, Mazen Kerbaj, Agustí Fernández, John Tilbury, Derek Bailey, Charlotte Hug, Bent Sørensen, and Esteban Algora. He can be heard on over 40 recordings, including his solo albums Percussion Music (Sofa) and IN (Kningdisk).
