Montréal — January 24th, 2014 — For immediate release — Quatuor Bozzini proudly presents its 25th European tour. For the past 10 years, the group has made guest appearances at numerous festivals, each one more cutting-edge, all of them intense with the vibe of brave new music.
February 1st marks the first QB trip to Iceland since 2006. Featured in Reykjavik’s Dark Music Days, the quartet performs at the stunning Harpa Concert Hall. This festival celebrates the diversity of today’s music, and attracts thousands of enthusiastic listeners. On the program: Leifur Þórarinsson (Iceland), John Cage (USA), Jennifer Walsh (Ireland), and Aldo Clementi (Italy). The quartet will also be giving a masterclass as part of its visit.
On February 4th, a hop over the Norwegian Sea brings us to our old stomping grounds in Boras, Sweden. Here two concerts await us in the series Ny Musik. Along with works by Swedish composers Claude Loyola Allgén and Lars Hallnäs, we will present works by Zoltán Jeney (Hungary), and again, Aldo Clementi, whose immense œuvre the quartet has recently begun to explore with a view to recording a disc in Autumn 2014.
Then, February 19th, after another pond-jump, this time to the UK, Quatuor Bozzini makes its premiere appearance in Bristol at Bristol New Music Festival. After a recital centered around the music of John Cage — foreshadowing this fall’s CD launch of his complete string quartets — QB will begin an intensive workshop series with composition students from the University of Bristol, culminating in another concert.
In addition to being stimulating exchanges of wonderment, these journeys enable the QB to refine its workshop/laboratory concept debuted in Vancouver two years ago, which will be reprised next year in Montréal as Bozzini Lab. It can be thought of as little brother to the Quartet’s Composer’s Kitchen, a project unto itself dedicated to the music of tomorrow, and to that cohort of artists in the process of inventing it.
Finalist to the 28th Grand Prix du Conseil des arts de Montréal 2012, the Bozzini Quartet is a radically contemporary ensemble evolving in a perpetually effervescent music scene. The group distinguishes itself by its open-mindedness toward the myriad artistic currents and disciplines of today. They indulge in taking risks and boldly venture off the beaten track, leaving commonplace ideas by the wayside. Passionate about their music-making, they win audiences over with their precise, supple and detailed playing. The quartet carefully builds up an uncompromising and diverse repertoire, never giving in to fashion. Since its inception, it has commissioned some hundred and thirty works and has premiered over two hundred. The guest of many international festivals, the Bozzini Quartet also supports the younger generation of composers through workshops, notably their Composer’s Kitchen. The quartet hosts its own recording label, Collection QB, on which they feature various composers from Canada and abroad.
