Trombone Quintet

Owen Underhill

Trombone Quintet has been performed in Calgary, Montréal and Vancouver…

The Trombone Quintet was commissioned by Jeremy Berkman in 1999. Jeremy is a very lyrical trombonist who is capable of great subtlety and fine interaction in his music-making. It was his idea to have a work for trombone and strings, and after discussing a couple of options we settled on the trombone and string quartet. Although an uncommon ensemble, the trombone and strings integrate very naturally. The first and third movements are string quartet chorales with the trombone as soloist. The second movement incorporates the virtuosic singing and playing skills of Jeremy Berkman. My innovation was to add in rhythmic wah/wah techniques on the harmon mute at the same time as the chords produced by his vocalizing. The fourth movement is the most extended and complex, alternating driving full ensemble sections with two lyrical trios.
