Neue Kraft Fühlend

Neue Kraft Fühlend has been performed in Huddersfield and Montréal…

Neue Kraft Fühlend is one of the many performance directions/tempo markings found in the Heiliger Dankgesang movement of Beethoven’s Op. 132 String Quartet in A minor; upon which, this piece is an artistic intervention. Written after a period of immense illness, it can be argued that Beethoven intended this music to be a chorale like hymn of thanksgiving. Structurally, Beethoven essentially alternates between slow and fast material with each presentation of the main motive becoming increasingly complex whilst the chorale becomes more pared down. In Neue Kraft Fühlend, I have taken the exact structure of Beethoven’s movement and created a negative image of it. Into this structure I have poured my own original material. As with any negative image, the lightest areas of the photographed subject appear darkest and the darkest areas appear lightest.
