Schleifen has been performed in Montréal and Viitasaari…
The German word “Schleifen” has many different meanings. As verb it can refer to actions such as rubbing, sliding, or sharpening. As a noun it can refer to ornaments on clothes, but it also translates as loop, as repetition in movement. Sometimes the strings gather to form a howling choir — the vocal quality of the final movements contrasts the beginning when small percussive machines are built by the instruments in common effort.
Two additional instruments — a wooden slide whistle and a whirled drum (with a string practically rubbing a skin) very shortly infiltrate the piece to emphasize the multiple meanings of the title of the work.
