Three Pieces

Christian Wolff

Three Pieces has been performed in Borås and Montréal…

Rock About, the first of Three Pieces for violin and viola (1979-80), is a particularly apt title for one of Wolff’s most rhythmically pregnant movements. The material comes from “Rock about my Saro Jane,” a song from the American Civil War, which, by the way, Bob Dylan has also taken up. The middle movement, Instrumental, is lyrical if somewhat whimsical, and, as the title suggests, the sizzling, closing Starving to Death on a Government Claim is also based on a folk song.

And as Art Lange notes, “Regardless of the amount of distortion or deconstruction involved, there is nevertheless an underlying image of conscience here, whether the tunes and their message is recognizable or not — a situation similar to those statues of angels placed in high, obscure corners of Gothic cathedrals — invisible to the human eye, but visible to God”.
