Cosmic Rays (1995)

Johnny Reinhard

string quartet

Program Notes

Johnny Reinhard’s Cosmic Rays for string quartet was premiered in 1995 by the Flux Quartet and has been heard twice at The Juilliard. It is a one movement composition based on the principle of the sun’s cosmic rays reflected through intonational genuflecting. The work is polymicrotonal, having sections in Ptolemey’s Lydian, Quadratic Prime Just Intonation, 11-tone equal temperament, and the photographing of an actual cosmic ray splitting into different subdivisions (up to 16). There are also sections of improvisation, serialism, and characterization (with Marvel’s Fantastic Four serving as a model).
