This performance of Cornelius Cardew’s Treatise will take place for four hours at La Sala Rossa. Different performers will be assigned a set of pages from the piece’s 193 page score. By prescribing no rules at all, in a visually stunning graphic score which was published in 1967, Cornelius Cardew’s Treatise brought the question of rules to the surface and by implication invited performers to create their own. It is this absence of rules which made Treatise such a radical departure.
The festival Suoni Per Il Popolo and the Bozzini Quartet have selected 20 different musicians and assigned them different sections of the score for them to perform. The performers represent different generations, traditions and communities and are mostly based within the Montréal experimental music making community.
